- Administrative or Biographical History: Sir Rowland Whitehead served as Liberal MP for South East Essex, 1906-1910, Private Secretary (unpaid) to Right Hon. Herbert Samuel, MP, 1906-1909, Parliamentary Secretary (unpaid) to the AttorneyGeneral, 1909-1910, a Lieutenant for the City of London, Chairman of the Council of Clifton College, a member of the Committee on Work of National Importance, 1916-1919, 2nd Lieutenant in the Volunteer Batallion, City of London Regiment, a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn, Justice of the Peace in Berkshire and a member of Berkshire County Council. He was created King's Council in 1910 and succeeded his brother to the family baronetcy in 1931. The collection also contains papers of his maternal grandfather Thomas Hinds, died 1879, from his father James Whitehead, 1834-1917 and his son Philip Whitehead, 1897-1953.

- Description: The papers include autograph letters, election posters and diaries, newspaper cuttings, family history research (records date from 1826), business and personal letters. The collection also comprises the following items: sketch books, watercolour paintings, cigar case, purse, photographs.

- System of Arrangement: The original order of this collection (WHD 17-21) has been maintained as closely as possible although some items from the Family History Series have been rearranged as they were to be found throughout the original collection. I have grouped the items according to areas of Sir Rowland Whitehead's interests which became evident upon assessing the collection.
