- Administrative or Biographical History: Sir Denis Le Marchant was principal secretary to Lord Brougham as Lord Chancellor (1830). He was Clerk of the Crown in Chancery (1834) and Secretary to the Board of Trade in 1836 and 1848; he was also joint Secretary to H.M. Treasury (1841). He was MP (Whig) for Worcester (1846-47) and later Under Secretary for the Home Department (1847). He was Chief Clerk to the House of Commons (1850-1871).

- Description: The papers of Sir Denis Le Marchant consist of correspondence received, mainly of a political nature as well as some general and personal letters (LEM/1/1-19). They also include press cuttings concerning reviews of Sir Denis Le Marchant's " Memoir of Earl Spencer (Viscount Althorp)" (LEM/1/9) and correspondence concerning the memoir on his father, Major-General John Gaspard Le Merchant (LEM/1/3). The papers also comprise correspondence between Thomas Barnes, Editor of "The Times" and Sir Denis Le Marchant (LEM/2/3), as well as some papers relating to the former; they also include correspondence addressed to Sir Denis Le Marchant, 3rd Baronet, grandson of the 1st Baronet, dated 1923 and concerning his grandfather's correspondence with Thomas Barnes (LEM/2/1).
