- Administrative or Biographical History: Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, was the sixth son and ninth child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. In 1801 he was given the titles Baron Arklow, Earl of Inverness and Duke of Sussex. Prince Augustus was to give energetic support to liberal causes such as Catholic emancipation, the abolition of the corn laws and parliamentary reform.
- Acquisition: Purchased by the House of Lords Record Office at auction from T.R.G.Lawrence of Crewkerne on 23 October 1969. Accessioned on 27 October 1969, accession number 762.
- Description: Contains a petition for relief presented to the House of Lords by the Catholics of Hardwick, Oxfordshire and adjacent villages (5 May 1819) including the signatures or marks of 57 men, and a speech by HRH Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773-1843) in the House of Lords (3 April 1829) in favour of the Roman Catholic Relief Bill, otherwise known as the Catholic Emancipation Bill, autographed and sealed by the Duke.
