- Administrative or Biographical History: It seems that Colonel Butler, an Irishman and a 'papist', also known as being dangerous, had been apprehended at Holyhead at the beginning of January by the Vice-Admiral and had escaped.
- Acquisition: Manuscript purchased from J.L.M Gulley, Manuscript Dealer, in February 2000. Accession number 3735.
- Description: This is a warrant written and signed by John Browne, Clerk of the Parliaments for the arrest of "Thomas Nethervill and Colonell Butler being now in custody at West Chester upon suspicion touchinge the present affaires of the kingdom of Ireland ...shall be apprehended ... by the Maior and Sheriffe of the county and citty of Chester delivered over unto the sheriffe of the county Palatine of Chester and soe from Sheriff to Sheriff until they shall be presented unto the Lords of Parliament And this shall be sufficient warrant in that behalf".

- Related Material: An earlier letter concerning the arrest and escape of Colonel Butler from Henry Whyte, Mayor of Baumaris, is held in Chester City Archives in ML/6/179. Whyte was seeking help for the arrest of Butler but his attempts appear to have been unsuccessful. Nethervill(e) and Butler have not been traced in the contemporary papers in Cal SD Domestic and Cal SP Ireland, although other certificates from the Clerk of the Parliaments can be found.
