- Administrative or Biographical History: Henry Grey Bennet (1777-1836) pursued a career in the Guards and as a barrister before entering Parliament as MP for Shrewbury in 1806. Unseated on petition in April 1807 he was elected again for Shrewsbury in 1811 and continued as a representative for the town until 1826. A radical Whig and a supporter of parliamentary reform Bennet, or 'Cocky' Bennet, as his friend Thomas Creevey referred to him, was an active and outspoken member of the opposition.
- Acquisition: Purchased from Collinge and Clark, Manuscripts Dealers, Oct 1993. Accession number 2813.
- Description: Diary of Henry Bennet, from 22 January to 11 July, the day that Parliament was prorogued. It chronicles Bennet's attendance in the House of Commons and records events there as well as speeches that Bennet himself made. At the end of the diary is an analysis of events; 'thus has ended a session, which, from the manner in which it was begun, has disappointed all parties'. Pasted in the volume are cuttings, mainly division lists, from newspapers and other printed sources.
