- Administrative or Biographical History: Adam Baynes was several times MP for Leeds and in 1659, for Appleby. He had also been a Captain in the Parliamentary army and a commissioner of excise and custom. He was a well-known anti-royalist, and was amongst those imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1666 for treason.

- Acquisition: Manuscripts Purchased from J.L.M Gulley, Manuscript Dealer, in July 1991. Accessioned on 15 July 1991, number 2672.
- Description: This collection comprises two documents. One is a writ for the arrest of Adam Baines for breach of privilege and the other is a petition from Adam Baynes himself to the House of Commons for his release from custody.

- Related Material: Ten volumes of letters to Adam Baines from his brother and his cousin, Robert and John Baynes, officers in the Commonwealth Army, are also held at the British Library Manuscript section, in Add MSS 21417-27. References to his military campaign in Ireland can be found in the Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series, 1649-50 p 574, and on his imprisonment in the Tower of London in the Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series, 1666-67 p 531 at the Public Record Office. Manuscripts relating to his purchase of forests and land in Lancashire and Derbyshire can be found in E 304/2/E7, E 304/3/J2, E 320/E7 and E/320/J2, also at the Public Record Office.
