- Description: The Government of Ireland Act, 1920, partitioned Ireland in two. "Southern Ireland" was to have a devolved parliament in Dublin, and "Northern Ireland" a devolved parliament in Belfast. Both parts of Ireland were to continue sending representatives to the Parliament at Westminster. Under the Anglo-Irish Treaty of Dec 1921, Southern Ireland gained Dominion Status and was to be known as the "Irish Free State". In 1937, a Constitution was passed which further established Ireland's independence. In 1948, the Irish government declared Ireland a Republic.
