Following increased unrest in Ireland at the same time as the Napoleonic Wars, the British Prime Minister, William Pitt, believed that the best way to maintain political power in Ireland was through an Act of Union. The Act established the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on 1 Jan 1801. It dissolved the Irish Parliament, and Irish representatives were to sit in the Parliament at Westminster. The Act remained in force until the Government of Ireland Act, 1920, when Ireland was partitioned. - Terms:
