- Administrative or Biographical History: Sub-Committee E was established in 1999 as one of 6 sub-committees of the European Union Committee. This was increased to 7 following the creation of sub-committee G in 2004 and reduced to 6 again following the elimination of sub-committee G in May 2012.
Sub-Committee E was initially named Sub-Committee E: Law and Institutions.
In May 2012, following a restructure of the European Union Select Committee Sub-Committee E was renamed the EU Justice, Institutions and Consumer Protection Sub-Committee. Its remit was the scrutiny of proposals in the field of criminal justice and procedures, fundamental rights, copyright and intellectual property. It also included scrutinising proposals related to institutions and consumer protection.
In June 2015, Sub-Committee E was renamed the EU Justice Sub-Committee however, its remit remained the same.
In January 2020, the sub-committee structure of the European Union Committee was changed again resulted in 5 sub-committees:
