- Administrative or Biographical History: The Matrimonial Causes Act 1857 made divorce without enactment possible and ecclesiastical matrimonial jurisdiction was replaced by that of the secular courts. Divorce Acts dealt with by Parliament since that date have related to Irish or Indian marriages (or other marriages beyond the jurisdiction of English courts), until those countries' independence, or have given relief on grounds not covered by the 1857 Act.
