• Administrative or Biographical History: Sir George Smyth Baden-Powell was born in Oxford on 24 December 1847. During his career he served as Private Secretary to the Governor of Victoria, Australia (1877-1878), Joint Special Commissioner to the West Indian Colonies (1882-1884), Political Assistant, Bechuanaland (1884-1885), Joint Special Commissioner on the Malta Constitution (1887), British Commissioner Bering Sea Fisheries Dispute (1891-1892). He died in London on 20 November 1898.
• Acquisition: The papers were deposited in 1978 by Mr F R Baden-Powell, Sir George's grandson. Accessioned by Parliamentary Archives on 7 November 1978. Accession number 1849. GBP/75 was deposited by the British Records Association in 2006 (BRA number 2276) (Accession 4667)

• Description: The papers consist of correspondence, newspaper cuttings, booklets and photographs, mostly relating to Baden-Powell's overseas interests including Ireland and, in particular, the Bering Straits dispute with the United States of America. There are also his college notebooks and the manuscript of an unpublished novel.
