- Administrative or Biographical History: Sir George Smyth Baden-Powell was born in Oxford on 24 December 1847. During his career he served as Private Secretary to the Governor of Victoria, Australia (1877-1878), Joint Special Commissioner to the West Indian Colonies (1882-1884), Political Assistant, Bechuanaland (1884-1885), Joint Special Commissioner on the Malta Constitution (1887), British Commissioner Bering Sea Fisheries Dispute (1891-1892). He died in London on 20 November 1898.
- Acquisition: The papers were deposited in 1978 by Mr F R Baden-Powell, Sir George's grandson. Accessioned by Parliamentary Archives on 7 November 1978. Accession number 1849. GBP/75 was deposited by the British Records Association in 2006 (BRA number 2276) (Accession 4667)

- Description: The papers consist of correspondence, newspaper cuttings, booklets and photographs, mostly relating to Baden-Powell's overseas interests including Ireland and, in particular, the Bering Straits dispute with the United States of America. There are also his college notebooks and the manuscript of an unpublished novel.

- System of Arrangement: Because of their international flavour, the papers have been classified (where applicable) firstly by continent or nearest continent, and then by country. Where enough material exists they have again been sub-divided by subject. They are in strict chronological order with either separate files for undated material or these items being retained at the rear of the file. The series references (1-73) refer to the boxes in which the collection is stored.
