- Administrative or Biographical History: Lord Diplock was appointed in 1956 as a judge in the Queen's Bench division, with the customary knighthood. Promotion to the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council followed in 1961 and to the House of Lords in 1968. From 1972 to 1982, he was chairman of the Permanent Security Commission and led enquiries into a number of security scandals. In 1972, Edward Heath's government appointed him to chair a commission of three, to consider legal proceedings to deal with terrorist activities in Northern Ireland. He reccommended that the courts should consist of judge alone; this was adopted and the courts became known as 'Diplock courts'.

- Description: The papers of Lord Diplock consist mainly of correspondence concerning judicial salaries (DIP/1), the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1976 (DIP/2), Clause 53 (the three Arbitrators clause) of the Administration of Justice Bill (DIP/4) and also of correspondence relating to his project for the publication of a microfilm edition of the Court of Appeal Transcripts (DIP/5).
