- Administrative or Biographical History: In early 1946, the Labour Government despatched an all-party parliamentary delegation to India to meet Indian leaders and convince them of the British desire for an early settlement of the Indian constitutional issue. Members of the delegation were: the Earl of Munster, Muriel Nichol, Lord Chorley, Mr Godfrey Nicholson, Mr Hopkin Morris, Brigadier Low, Mr Bottomley, Mr Sorensen, Professor Richards, Major Wyatt.
There followed, in March 1946, a "Cabinet Mission", made up of Cabinet Ministers, Lord Pethick-Lawrence, Sir Stafford Cripps and Mr. A. V. Alexander. The negotiations during the Cabinet Mission were conducted on behalf of the Congress by Abul Kalam Azad who was assisted by Pandit Jawahir Lal Nehru and Sardar Patel. Gandhi was, however, frequently consulted. The negotiations were stalled on the basic question whether India was to remain united or to be split up to satisfy the Muslim League?s demand for Pakistan. - Acquisition: Transferred from the Lords Library on 23 December 1988.
