- Administrative or Biographical History: Airey Neave was Conservative MP for Abingdon, 1953-79. From 1975 to 1979 he was Opposition Spokesman on Northern Ireland Affairs and Head of the Private Office of the Leader of the Opposition (Margaret Thatcher). On 30 March 1979 he was killed by an Irish republican bomb in the car park of the House of Commons.

- System of Arrangement: The political papers of Airey Neave have been divided into Constituency Papers (AN/1-279) and Non-Constituency Papers (AN/280-708). The Consitituency Papers have been further divided into files of individual cases (AN/1-82) and subject files (AN/83-279). The Non-Consitituency Papers have been further divided into three sections: (i) Political Papers, (ii) Personal Papers and (iii) Miscellaneous Books. The Political Papers (AN/280-597) have been subdivided into: (a) general subject files (AN/280-412); (b) files created as Opposition Spokesman on Northern Ireland Affairs, 1975-79 (AN/413-554); and, (c) files created as Head of the Private Office of the Leader of the Opposition, 1975-79 (AN/555-597). The Personal Papers (AN/598-707) have been subdivided into: (a) General files (AN/598-627); (b) Business files (AN/628-637); (c) Literary files (AN/638-671); and, (d) War and post war (AN/672-707). The files are generally arranged alphabetically within these sub-divisions.
